  • Botanical Name: Hoya kerrii
  • Common Names: Sweetheart, Lucky-heart
  • Description: The Hoya Sweetheart Variegated commonly called the wax plant is a non-blooming houseplant with heart-shaped leaves. This Variegated version has a splash of yellow on the leaf. The vines are wood-like and the leaves are waxy. Native to tropical Asia, these plants do well in warm weather. This single-leaf offering is a very slow grower, but is also extremely hardy. Ideal as a novelty gift, it is more of an ornament than a needy houseplant. For the houseplant enthusiast, proper care and patience can be rewarded with a striking growth of multiple heart-shaped leaves on vines.

Care Instructions

  • 🪴 General care: Easy

Hoya Sweetheart Variegated, also known as the Hoya Kerrii, is an easy-care, slow-growing plant perfect for beginners. Its heart-shaped, variegated leaves make it a charming and unique addition to any plant collection.

It’s a hardy plant that can tolerate some neglect and is well-suited to indoor environments.

  • 💦 Water: Low to Moderate

Hoya Sweetheart Variegated prefers to be kept on the drier side. Water it thoroughly when the top 2-3 inches of soil feel dry, usually every 2-3 weeks, depending on your environment.

Its succulent-like leaves store water, so overwatering can lead to root rot. Make sure the pot has proper drainage.

  • ☀️ Light: Bright Indirect

This Hoya variety thrives in bright, indirect light, though it can handle some direct sunlight. The variegation will be more pronounced in brighter light, but too much direct sun can cause the leaves to scorch.

In lower light conditions, growth may slow down, and the variegation might become less vibrant.

  • 🌱 Growth: Slow-growing, compact plant

Hoya Sweetheart Variegated is slow-growing and compact, with thick, heart-shaped leaves. While it typically stays small, with the right care, it can eventually grow into a long vine.

  • ✂️ Maintenance: Low

This Hoya is low-maintenance and doesn’t require frequent pruning. Remove any dead or yellowing leaves to keep it healthy.

Because it grows slowly, it doesn’t need repotting often. Clean the leaves occasionally to remove dust and allow the plant to breathe.
